Through regional collaborative efforts, the Workforce Development Coalition (WDB) of Humboldt County brings together community members from the private sector, local government, non-profits, labor unions, education, and public agencies to:
Catalyze
leadership to collaborate and focus attention on Target industry needs, particularly preparing a skilled workforce for successful careers in those Target industries.Demonstrate
and articulate the career pathways of demand occupations in the Target industries to youth and adults. Increase the number of high school students who graduate prepared for post-secondary vocational training, further education and/or a career with advancement opportunities in the Target industries. Focus on at-risk youth and those from low income communities. Enroll 90% of adults in training that leads to employment in demand occupations in the Target industries.Support
system alignments, service integration, and continuous improvement in the utilization of Target industry data for evidence-based strategic planning, policy-making, and deployment of resources within the greater workforce system, as well as guidance for youth and adult job seekers and employers.

Updates
On April 6th 2021 the County of Humboldt’s Economic Development Division engaged with the California Center for Rural Policy (CCRP) to conduct a series of interviews related to discussions surrounding the improvement and restructuring of workforce services in Humboldt County. CCRP concluded its findings from these interviews and compiled its findings in a document later presented to the Board of Supervisors titled the, “Humboldt County Workforce Analysis Summary Report."
Later, on June 29th 2021, and based on findings and conclusions in CCRP’s report, the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors directed Economic Development Division staff to advance the reform of workforce programs in Humboldt County and directed staff to form a new workforce coalition comprised of local community partners.
The development and framework for this new coalition is currently underway. Titled the Humboldt Workforce Coalition (HWC), this alliance of stakeholders presently includes the County of Humboldt’s Office of Economic Development, the Humboldt County Workforce Development Board, Humboldt State University Special Programs Foundation, and College of the Redwoods.
Coalition Updates:
July 21 2021
- WDB Executive Committee ratified letters of intent to contract with HSU Sponsored Programs
- WDB Executive Committee appoints HSU Sponsored Programs Foundation to become the Regional Organizer and to reallocate regional organizer funds to HSU Sponsored Programs appointed HSU as Humboldt County’s regional organizer.
- WDB Executive Committee appoints of HSU Sponsored Programs Foundation as AJCC/Job Market Operator and also the Career Services Provider.
August 2nd, 2021
- State California Workforce Development Board approved re-designation of Humboldt’s Local Workforce Development Area and approved recertification of Humboldt’s Local Workforce Development Board (Local Board).

The Workforce Development Coalition (WDB) oversees the one-stop workforce system, and The Job Market has been a key component of that system in Humboldt County since 1999. At The Job Market, job seekers and employers can access the services and support of over thirty collaborative workforce partners. The partner’s three main focal points are workforce preparation, economic development, and School-to-Career.
